About the Practice

How Ace & Co. works.

A short walk through who we are, what we do not do, and what an engagement looks like from the inside — written for the founders and managing directors who tend to read pages like this carefully.

Who we are

A small senior-led practice.

Ace & Co. was set up to do one thing properly: work with owner-managed British businesses on the management and leadership questions that quietly decide what the next five years feel like. The practice is small by intention. We are senior consultants who have run businesses, sat on boards, and spent enough time in difficult rooms to know when to push and when to listen.

We are based in Colchester, in the centre of Essex, and the firm reflects that — calm in tone, deliberate in pace, English in cadence. We do not have an army behind us. We do not need one. The companies we work with rarely benefit from being given a team of twelve when what they wanted was an honest second opinion and a programme that fits the people they actually employ.

What we do not do

The work we politely decline.

A clear sense of what we do not do tends to be more useful than another paragraph about what we do. We do not write hundred-page strategy decks for businesses with thirty staff. We do not run motivational keynotes. We do not sell off-the-shelf training catalogues. We do not chase the boards of FTSE companies; they are well served already.

We also do not subcontract delivery. If the work cannot be led by one of our senior consultants in person, we will say so at the diagnostic stage rather than at the proposal. And we do not auto-renew engagements. Every retainer runs to its end, gets reviewed honestly, and renews only if both sides agree there is more useful work to do.

How engagements run

The shape of a piece of work.

Most engagements begin with a single morning. We sit with the founder or managing director, sometimes with one or two members of the senior team, and we talk through what is in front of the business. The aim of that session is honesty, not pitching — if the right answer is to do nothing, or to bring someone else in, we will say it.

From there, the work shapes itself. A diagnostic morning often leads to a leadership cohort, or a coaching contract for the founder, or a few sessions of commercial advisory. Sometimes it leads to a recommendation that the business needs an HR director rather than a consultancy. We treat that recommendation as part of the service.

  • Diagnostic morning, sometimes a working lunch, no proposal pressure on the day.
  • A short written proposal within the week, scoped to the actual brief.
  • Delivery by the consultant who scoped it, in person where it matters.
  • A handover session at the end that leaves the work owned by your team.
Where we work

Colchester, the South East, and remotely UK-wide.

Our office is in Colchester. The South East is our home patch and we deliver in person across Essex, Suffolk, Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire and London on a regular weekly cadence. Most owner-managed businesses we work with are within a comfortable train or motorway journey of those counties.

For clients further afield we work remotely as standard, with the occasional travel day where the work earns it. A virtual cohort, well-designed, is genuinely useful; a virtual cohort built lazily is genuinely not. We hold the same standard for both.

Discretion

Quiet by default.

We do not publish client names. We do not run case studies on the website. Coaching engagements are confidential as a matter of contract, and even our cohort programmes are arranged without the assumption that the cohort wants to be talked about.

This is partly principle and partly practical. Owner-managed businesses tend to dislike being marketing material, particularly when the work involves the founder. We would rather be the practice you quietly recommend to one or two peers than the one with a logo wall. If you would like to speak to a client privately before engaging us, we will arrange it with their permission.
